Occupation | Railway Clerk Note: THE definitive history of the Manx Northern Railway, by Dr R Preston and R Powell Hendry was published by Hillside in 1980, SBN 9505933 2 X. It records that David McDowall took up appointment as manager of the MNR 12 April 1898 having been chief clerk of the Wigtownshire Railway, then manager of the Ayrshire & Wigtownshire Railway in 1891. In 1892 he joined the Caledonian Railway and by 1898 was in their audit department and living at Mount Florida, Glasgow. By 1900 he was suffering from Bright's disease and went to Harrogate, Yorkshire on 25 September. Sadly he died on 26 October. The following Monday, 29 October his body returned to the Island at Douglas, where it was taken by special train to Ramsey for the funeral and subsequent burial at Lezayre. His son James was storekeeper and Chief Clerk under his father and took over as acting secretary and acting manager until succeeded by a James McMillan on 17 January 1901. A photograph of him appears on page 71 of the book. It is possible to interpret the article to consider his death to have been in 1901, were it not for the reference to subsequent events early in 1901 and the quoted dates are supplemented by the days of week, so apparently tying it to 1900. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Occupation | THE definitive history of the Manx Northern Railway, by Dr R Preston and R Powell Hendry was published by Hillside in 1980, SBN 9505933 2 X. It records that David McDowall took up appointment as manager of the MNR 12 April 1898 having been chief clerk of the Wigtownshire Railway, then manager of the Ayrshire & Wigtownshire Railway in 1891. In 1892 he joined the Caledonian Railway and by 1898 was in their audit department and living at Mount Florida, Glasgow. By 1900 he was suffering from Bright's disease and went to Harrogate, Yorkshire on 25 September. Sadly he died on 26 October. The following Monday, 29 October his body returned to the Island at Douglas, where it was taken by special train to Ramsey for the funeral and subsequent burial at Lezayre. His son James was storekeeper and Chief Clerk under his father and took over as acting secretary and acting manager until succeeded by a James McMillan on 17 January 1901. A photograph of him appears on page 71 of the book. It is possible to interpret the article to consider his death to have been in 1901, were it not for the reference to subsequent events early in 1901 and the quoted dates are supplemented by the days of week, so apparently tying it to 1900. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
