LETTICE Knollys married Walter Devereux, Second Viscount Hereford, 1st Earl of Essex. He was born in 1540 at his grandfather's castle in Carmarthen, South Wales. Queen Elizabeth created him Earl of Essex in 1572. In the following year he attempted to subdue the O'Neills and Scotts in Ulster, who were led by Sorley Boy MacDonnell. In 1574 by treachery, he succeeded in capturing the chieftain Sir Brian MacPhelim. The Queen appointed him Earl Marshal of Ireland in 1575. There were 5 children of this marriage, Robert his illfated successor, Walter, Francis, Penelope my ancestor and Dorothy. The 1st Earl of Essex died at Dublin Ireland on 22nd September 1576 and was buried at Carmarthen South Wales. After Essex's death Lettice married Robert Earl of Leicester and thirdly to Sir Christopher Blount, Knight. She died on 25th December 1634 and was buried at Warwick.
